About Me

I am Noel Anyi,a Kayan sub-tribes boy of Baram,Sarawak. I am from Long Pilah/Long Atip,Baram..I've been playing sape/sampe music since I was 12 years old(form 1). Now I am 17 years old. I often play Sape for officials function or traditional celebrations and also participating in a lot of Traditional Sape Music competition around Sarawak. I can play sape Lutang also. I'm very interested about our traditional music/dance and arts which has now sidelined or forgotten by our young generations. Our culture/music/dance and arts will be a very good business in the future if promoted. As my theme and vision is"KEEPING THE TRADITION". My father(Anyie wan) is very supportive for to me when I learned how to master playing Sape. He spent thousand of ringgit to get all orang ulu's musics/instruments and worriers accesories because of his interest in promoting Sape/ traditional cultural and craft. My father also selling Sape and other craft work. My brother(Shaun Anyie) and sister(Ellisa Bulan Anyie) also can play sape.

Jok Jau Evong : Permata Dari Belantara (my sape master)

Jok jau Evong, a down to earth Kayan sub-tribes man from Uma Bawang, upper Baram who has an intense spirit of playing Sape’ and is interested in Orang Ulu(upriver people) cultural. He, a simple man who lives in the deep forest of baram previously, had experienced a lot of real life of the kayan life hood, cultural and heritage; and he is determined to pass it to the young generation through his story and vision. Jok reminds the now generation about the pass, from the basic ways of Kayan’s life such as normal daily routine like fishing and hunting to the old style longhouse and Dayung. Apart from that, he also tells about Ngayau (head haunting)to  the epic Kayan migration and a lot more stories especially from the pass. It has lead him to embed his experiences from the pass to each single of his  Sape’ playing. His famous Sape’ music that comes from his dream is called the Sape’ Nga’ei (recalling  the memory of all time). Depsite that, his other Sape’ named are called as Sape Bakung (warrior dance), Sape’ Bakung Ule, Sape’ Kirep, Sape’ hivan Tujai, Sape’ Lutang, Sape’ Liveng, Sape Lasan, Sape’ Doh, Sape Lake, Saga’ Lado and others. The sound of Jok’s Sapes’ brings out  dignity to the people who listens the melodies and connect them more nearly to the forest and they will remind them to the pass. The melodies also provide an ambient back drop of relaxing. Jok always performs the kayan community Sape’ music overseas especially at Japan. Jok has taught me all about Sape’ melodies and his Sape’ tunes to sure that the music is alive.
